Coastal Cliff

Oil on fine linen. This is a favorite location near my house in Gloucester, MA. There is a short hike through woods and then a rocky coast appears with cliffs and tidal pools. I am working on a series of paintings here and for this one I chose to turn my back on the sea and to instead paint the red granite rock that is common in this part of New England. I kept going back morning after morning adding layer after layer of paint and sometimes, on my way down though the woods, I saw deer running and leaping through the woods and I imagined a pair at the top of the cliffs looking out at the sea.
