Layers Of Time & Space

Oil paint on fine linen. This is a favorite location near where I live in Gloucester, MA. There is a 7 minute hike through woods and then dramatic rocky cliffs and a chasm at the edge of the sea. There's a lot to paint and it's a very inspiring place.
Gloucester is known for its granite rock and some of it has a reddish quality and for this painting I chose to study the actual rock formations instead of looking out at the ocean. There was a seep of water trickling down through the rock and I tried to catch the way that it caught the light. The moving sunlight and my awareness of geologic time and my own short stay on this planet pushed me to try to capture the essence of the moment. I went back day after day at the same time and added layers of paint in my pursuit of this truth.
