Reverence

Reverence, Nocturne
Reverence
Studio painting informed and painted from a plein air study from Monterey. When arriving at this location at the end of the day and to be completely socked in by fog at first seemed to me like it was going to not work out in the painting. But as soon as I started to paint this I realized how beautiful and poetic this could be. I wanted to convey that wonder of the land from reaching towards the fog and the sea meandering out beyond with the subtle luminous blue grays and muted lavender grays as the last hint of sunlight barely glowed through the dense muffled Monterey fog so indicative of this area.

In this studio version of my plein air study I wanted to emphasize the sense of wander and awe I felt from the shapes and mystery of the fog. That feeling of something larger than us and beyond our understanding.
