AS THE CROW FLIES

AS THE CROW FLIES, Clouds & Sky
AS THE CROW FLIES
In this painting, I sought to capture the mesmerizing interplay between the ever-changing sky and the tranquil surface of a large pond. The focal point of the piece is the brilliantly lit clouds as the sun sinks into a band of dense steel blue, dominating the canvas with their ethereal forms.

During my time at this location, I observed some of the clouds taking on bird-like shapes, imbuing the scene with a sense of movement and freedom. These fleeting formations add a dynamic element to the composition, suggesting the joyous dance of flight amidst the vast expanse of the sky.

For the past two decades, I have been drawn to this particular spot because of the spectacular cloud formations that manifest over the serene body of water. Each visit brings a new spectacle, as the clouds weave intricate patterns against the backdrop of the changing light.

Through this painting, I aim to convey not only the visual beauty of the clouds and water but also the deep sense of connection and reverence I feel for this cherished landscape. It serves as a testament to the enduring allure of nature and the profound impact it has on our spirits.

"In my studio practice, I follow a consistent approach. Initially, I embark on a journey of exploration, capturing photographs of my subjects while meticulously observing elements like value, color relationships, and intensity. On some occasions, I indulge in plein air painting sessions to further immerse myself in the intended atmosphere.

The process of composing begins with direct observation of my subject, followed by a reinterpretation through the lens of my camera. Subsequently, I consolidate all gathered information and refine the composition using digital tools like Photoshop. If needed, I create value sketches to further refine my vision before transferring the finalized image onto canvas.

Utilizing a 38” TV screen as my reference, I work in layers, employing a combination of wet-on-wet and wet-over-dry techniques to achieve depth and richness in my paintings. I am fortunate to work in a serene studio environment nestled amidst hardwoods on a picturesque river in Southern Minnesota. The proximity to nature allows me to draw inspiration directly from my surroundings, enriching my creative process."
